Bullet Boy (2004-BBC Films)

‘Bullet Boy’ is and was always an important film to be made. Not just for the potential growth of ethnic British Cinema like ‘East is East'(1999) was but also for talking about the very real circumstances that lie behind the everyday news pieces which are shown on 6pm News surrounding London gang related violence. It depicts a very sincere lead character in unfortunate rather than the scary young ethnic criminal often represented in mainstream news outlets daily in cities across the UK.

2046 (Hong Kong-2004-Wong Kar-wai)

It’s a true film exploration of high end romance, drama, fashion, love, life and pain in extremely old fashion Hollywood manner. However more modern and socially relevant with the location and culture of oriental modern Asia. It tracks the long non explicit but more emotional affair of Su Li-zhen in 1960s Hong Kong with Chow Mo-wan. It also manages to touch on grande elements of time travel and science fiction exploring moments and coincidences in life which are unexplained due to time, it’s past and present effects on people which create a dramatic circle of life in the big scheme of things. It’s complex and grande in scale, visual delivery and entire plot narrative. It’s ‘Cloud Atlas’ big basically.

Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn-2011)

I think the major themes regarding the film ‘Drive’ are personal moral compass according to money, crime and how to survive. Like any crime drama it explores what (pun intended) drives people to commit theft or robbery to keep going under harsh financial, family life circumstances. “IS HE A GOOD GUY?” well that is explored in Drive as we somehow as audiences watch an aid to many criminals through driving speedy escape actually look after a young family. It explores love too as the ending is poetic and nicely fictional but socially tied up. This character goes on to leave the young mother alone to face his penance from Mafia bosses after him to live in peace without him and his troubles.

iZombie

iZombie is a great premise for a teen based sitcom and show. It combines crime solving, strong females and zombie horror in true comedic modern fashion. It definitely picks up exactly where Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer left off tv wise but in a new evolved way for it’s target 2017 audience. The humour of writing this is so comical it’s not about horror but dealing with the cards life has dealt you in evolving fashion. Even the lead characters name ‘Liv Moore’ is an obvious poke of fun to the entire plot.

Legend (UK/2015-Brian Helgeland)

I have always found biographical films and cinema extremely intriguing. Not only in terms of history, people and subject matter but how far this is spun or changed in order to create entertainment. Here with Legend this is ever more interesting as a person who grew up South London all life and would hear many stories from very real people about 60s East End London and the Krays. Fact or Fiction is the whole point of journalism after all, even with film reviews. Brian Helgeland’s 2015 British Gangster film gives a glorious tour of 1960s East End London crime life, in glamorous fashion.

Sexy Beast (2000/Jonathan Glazer)

One of my favourite personal things about ‘Sexy Beast‘ as a film about London criminal life is that it maintains such a British quirky unexplained but understood sense of Brit humour…even as the horror and real crime happens. What is depicted through Johnathan Glazer is that people real or fictional are just trying to get ahead in one of the harshest metropolitan first world west cities.
